I was thinking of getting the hauppage hdpvr for Christmas and the cables and such, as well as eye tv for Mac compatibility but I also want to commentate on the videos.

I'm new to this so I figured I would go to theater mode, recordthat with the hdpvr, thenuse some random program to commentate it

What's a good preferably free program for macs that does that?

No need for any 3rd party software - just use iMovie for commentary, titles, simple effects, editing, etc.

So you're going to buy the eyetv software and the hauppauge separately? Try this Elgato HD PVR with EyeTV I think you'll find it's overall cheaper package and you still get great quality video. I use it for my gameplay recording.

I ordered the EyeTV HD like Oz said, it's all in one package, got it for $20 off on blackfriday. Using iMovie 10 for editing n commentary.

as a sidenote: does anybody think imovie 11 is worth the purchase? imo probly not

Total the HD pVR and Eyetv is $200. You'd pay more for the Hauppauge and software unless you found a good deal

are you sure it can record game videos? looking through the information, it seems that it only can record TV shows

I don't want to spend $200 on something i wouldn't use

AFAIK, Oz has uploaded gameplay using it. Therefore, it works. Do a google search, it can record. I've ordered it, so if it doesn't work Oz has some 'splaining to do.

eyetv software ($80) + hauppauge($200) = $280
eyeTV HD + software = $200

Every game up there was used, using the Elgato HD PVR with EyeTV

However there are some other things you need such as, component cables, component splitter, and an red white audio cable. However, you would need those anyway with the Hauppauge.

Yeah you need the component cables for the ps3 but then you also need two more component cables and a component splitter. Also a component video connector will be needed as well. You need to split the output source between your tv and hdpvr.
