Thanks to the holiday season n many family visits, Ive got some spare change laying around again.
While i was really tempted to get a ps3 n gt5, I decided it was time to maby upgrade my monitor. The current one is an old rot that i got with the first computer I ever purchased, some compaq. Whenever I upgraded my desktop in the past Ive always cut out the monitor upgrade in favor of a better gfxcard, more memory, etc always telling myself that ill upgrade the screen "later". Since i've been saying "later" for about 12 years now, I thought it might be time to finally cut the bullshit n make the investement. Anyhow, I literally have no clue what a decent monitor costs nowadays & no clue what material is best for gaming (i remember manyyears ago plasma screens were terrible for example). I browsed around a bit n found all sorts of things. The only thing I remember being important is the responsetime (which is atleast one thing i didnt have to worry about w my trusty crt). In short, Im quite clueless when it comes to monitors n wouldnt mind some advice. I dont really care about a bigass 90" screen (my current 19" crt does it job just fine so), I just want smth reliable, suited for gaming & a good price. |

You should probably be looking for something like a 22 or 24 inch screen. Standard resolution nowadays is 1920x1080. Response times should really be a maximum of 5ms and 2ms, although I very much doubt you would see the difference.
People more knowledgeable than me on this subject can probably go into great detail about different panel types and refresh rates and contrast ratios, so I'll leave it at that.

I always buy Acer when it comes to monitors. Acer is what we used at my job when the displays and fixtures we built required monitors and I trusted the electronics dept with their choices since the product had to last a long time and would be put through heavy usage. I don't know much about refresh rates or response times but I know from a reliability standpoint the Acer is worthy. I have a 19" widescreen and I've had zero issues, had it for roughly 3-4 years and probably paid around $125-150 back then. I'm sure they are bigger and cheaper now.

Personally I got two Asus VH242H 23.6" monitors (purchased 6 months apart). They were surprisingly cheap considering the quality. Great colour, response time and no ghosting. Aside from gaming, I often watch movies & TV shows on them. Quote:

Beware of "dynamic contrast ratios" as the number you get when you measure it like this is massive (numbers like 60,000:1) which obviously sounds better than a "non-dynamic" (not a technical term) contrast ratio of 3000:1 Unfortunately there isn't really any way of converting between the two.
LED screens = much better contrast ratio but lower res (per screen size) and higher response time than regular LCD screens. A decent spec monitor (1920*1080, a dynamic ratio fo 60,000:1 (IIRC), 24", known brand, gloss black, LCD, aesthetically pleasing, HDMI, DVI-D, VGA & audio out) cost me £150 a few months back. Also, I know it was in currys/pc-world but upon watching the camera fly around Grand Valley Speedway post-race even Gran Turismo 5 didn't look at all special to me on the PS3. I looked at it and just thought "sceneray etc is the same level of graphics as COD4 running on highest settings on a PC." I know that situation was entirely not in GT5's favour but it was disappointing.

my monitor; http://www.benq.com.au/products/prod...m?product=1514 I have no idea about what to look for but I know that it's served me well. Dunno how it fits into your budget though.

That is the monitor I have. At the time, and retailors, of research the BenQ G2420HD and the Samsung B2430L had class-leading specs. Nothing else got near it for anywhere +- 20% of the price.
It's worth researching though, newegg have a great range of monitors. Make a spreadsheet with resolution, inputs, CR, response time & price to help you see all of the differences really clearly.

Where "nuthing" means format failing where vB turns more than one space into one space on every occasion to prevent stetching the forum.

So im browsing around a bit:
-the benq v2220 looks pretty nice n has a decent price of €199. Though it seems like they upped the price alot with "thinnest screen ever bullcrap" & a contrast ratio that isnt even humanly percievable. The v2420 seems like the bigger n overpriced version of this (€279) - The benq g2320 and g2411 both look good (i suppose they are really similar to what you were talking a out). They cost €179 n €229 respectivly. I especially like the g2320, seems to have all i need n a prett good price on top of that. - only 1 acer screen in the store im currently browsing & it's a touchscreen - a handful of pricey samsungs, that dont seem to have any actual advantage (n cost much due to built in speakers etc) -PHILIPS LCD 224E2SB seems to look good aswell. Only been browsing 1 retailer so far though(the one where I buy all my hardware). Currently leaning towardq thag 229€ benq, which looks really good I believe. |

Cool spelling, brah.
Anyway, just go with the best that you can afford. Between the monitors that you have described, there will likely be very little perceivable difference.
