Wanting to buy decent speakers for the price of a little over 3 packs of socks? How's that for putting quality of a product into perspective lol

Logitech are (or at least "were" - their product line up has changed a lot over the last year or two) a good bet for low budget stuff. The x...30 and x...40 were very good given they cost £19.99 but the X series doesn't really seem to exist any more.

Do you just need speakers, or are you trying to get decent sound quality at a higher volume?

I'm sure ViS will be along soon to tell us that virtually everything under $million is useless headline-spec driven tat :L

This is getting repetitive.

Not in your price range.

I use Labtec and while they aren't the greatest speakers they are typically inexpensive. A quick Google search for labtec pc desktop speakers rendered a few results for less than $20.

I only rage when people overrate the quality of products that they are not qualified to review, leading to widespread misinformation.

Since you're spending that little, would you consider headphones? It's much easier to get cheap headphones of acceptable quality than it is to get cheap speakers of acceptable quality since, at that price range, they're mostly using the same drivers. If you can find powered speakers for that price, go for them. If not, just get a pair of headphones that you can find relevant reviews for. I can't help you much beyond that.

EDIT: Since they're using the same drivers, headphones will be relatively higher in quality since they won't be under as much stress. Thought I'd clarify that point a bit.

EDITEDIT: Drivers are the bits that make sound.

I has a decent headset, just want a pair of cheap speakers to listen to music with, without having to wear my headset all around my room.

CBA to drag 6 speakers (and undo the associated load of wiring) home from uni for xmas break.

They'd be terribad for the same reason as any speakers. It's a nightmare to make any concrete sense out of the specs that are normally provided.

Got any friends with speakers? Listen to theirs and buy a set that you're comfortable with. No other way out unless you're willing to take risks.

EDIT: Ugh. They're USB.

I mean it when I say that you need to get properly powered speakers. USB provides jack shit.

EDITEDIT: Then again, I doubt that you can actually find functional amps at that price...

Whatever, just go with my try-before-you-buy advice.

If you just want noise, of some relation to what is coming out of your soundcard, to be projected at you instead of having to wear earphones then anything will do as a temporary measure. At $20 it's never going to be good enough to not want to replace should you ever have the cash.

There's a difference between telling you that you're never going to find anything good at your price range and telling you that what you HAVE come up with so far is utter tosh and that you should find something else.

Here's what I don't understand. You post a thread asking for advice on a difficult issue and you simply ignore all of the extremely sound, extremely safe advice that I give you and continue to bash your head against a wall while resenting the fact that you have to put a little bit of effort into finding a good product for a low price.

If you don't care about the quality of your product... Well, why does this thread exist?

You haven't exactly explicitly stated what I should be looking for in speakers, in lieu of providing an actual product suggestion.

And I already explained why I can't do that. Publically-available specs aren't informative at all. I also told you what you should do because of that. Do you not know ANYONE with cheap student speakers that you're comfortable with?

Failing that, go with FR's suggestion. I trust his sense of quality.

Lag, hope this doesn't triple post...

I actually came into a windfall today of 100 dollars.

Would it be possible to find something in the midrange of say 50-75 or am I better off going cheaper (obviously less longevity/quality) or is there any benefit at all in going up to 100?
