Default Halp me build.

So my parents told my brother he could get a new PC. I haven't been following hardware developments since I built my PC (2 years ago) so I have no idea what the deal is nowadays. Build will be used for gaming and possibly, in the future, basic video editing and CAD. Although no need to go all out speccing it for CAD, it's a hobby rather than a profession so it's not that important.

Budget is £600, use this site if possible since the depot/warehouse is near my house.

A build with and a build without a monitor (no need to go bigger that 22") would be nice, since i'm not sure whether he intends to keep his current monitor. An OS will be required. Mouse/Keyboard/Speakers not required.

Thanks chums.

On the phone now, but from your budget, I reckon we might just get a hexcore AMD build without a monitor. With a monitor, maybe an Athlon quad and a hd6850.

Boring repeat threads with minor changes in details are boring. Someone ask for a novelty build :L

Here's some useful input: A regular gaming system, mine or yours, would appear to demolish the "D" of CAD. A Phenom II & now-ancient HD4830 has no trouble building/extruding/cutting/rendering/rotating a single, but complex, 3D component in real time. I can't speak for huge files with several components and when it comes to doing anything to the model that you've just made (simulating anything whether it be fluid flow or applying loads to your model) then that's where i7s & lots of RAM come into their own.

Hexcore AMDs, whilst not a 975 (I think that's what we're up to atm, 3.5GHz stock), are still absolutely fine for gaming as they'll behave just like any multicore Phenom II at 2.8GHz or whatever the 1065t or w/e is clocked at. Not a clue about clock speeds, but the hexcore AMDs have their own version of Intel's turbo mode (different to speedstep & cool'n'quiet in that it overclocks when you need it rather than underclocks when you don't need err "it")

Also the 5770 isn't as good value as a GTX 460 or HD6850 but it's still absolutely fine for a 22" monitor.

The 8 series AMD motherboards are great value - but then AMD motherboards all have been of late. The 870, like the 770, can still use very fast DDR3, the highest-end CPUs and are packed with features (USB3, SATA3 etc) but this time come with that sort of "no man's land" x8 or even x16+x4 crossfire.

Has your corsair PSU given up the ghost yet? If yes, well then I'm glad it had a 5 year warranty, but get one anyway.

This is getting repetitive.

Currently seeing what I can come up with on CCL.

One thing though. I know that you can collect from CCL, but you can still get free delivery from other places that probably have better prices and/or a better range of products.

If it's a significant difference, go for it.
