----GENERIC NEW PC THREAD WARNING HERE----

I'll keep it brief.

My brother needs a new PC essentially and he'd like to keep it at max 1k to 1,300 USD. He'd be incredibly happy if it ends up being <1000.

I'm assuming newegg will have the best prices... he already has a monitor + peripherals so he's set in that regard (although he could upgrade his monitor I guess).

Suggestions? He wants to use it to run newer RPGs/RTSs (Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, Shogun Total War) on higher settings and he also plays WoW, but he definitely does not FPS.

i5-750 + 460/6850? Something else? Steam chat me if it's more convenient or wutnot.

Bit of a puzzle at the moment this one.

Intel's new socket 1155 would be perfect at that price range. HOWEVER, Newegg have stopped selling the P67/H67 motherboards due to a chipset fault.

I'll let abc decide whether you should go back to old tech or consider an AMD hexcore system instead.

1) If he plays loads, invest money in latest tech. If he doesn't play so much that it is neccessary to run everything at near highest settings then get a 2.8GHz AMD quad core and a 5770 (which is now branded 6770) or something and it will still obliterate his current PC. Spend the saved $500 on something good.

2) Generic pure-gaming-focused $1000 PC. Ditch one (of the two) GTX 460s. i5 750. cheaper mobo? smaller HDD? Corsair VX550?

Sums last few years up well:

"Our mid-range enthusiast systems have been a little predictable over the past year. The Core i5-750 and Core i7-920 proved themselves to be ideal starting points in the $1000-$1500 price range. And while we’ve been able to demonstrate some specific areas of success with Phenom II X3 and X4 alternatives, the quad-core Intel lineup continues to shine as the sweet-spot."

EDIT: LOL @ fail. So that particular link goes to december's build which was rather experimental to be different for once. Try clicking a link to the same-price-but-faster-in-applications-due-to-a-i5-quad "september" build.

I know the new CPUs had been withdrawn as there was an issue and that this is now either sorted or about to be sorted imminently. Not seen much info on motherboards, i.e. when they're coming back but then I haven't looked.

$1000 gets you an X58, i7 930 and 6870 anyway?

This is getting repetitive.
