Default Advice Please

Ok so I have been needing to get a desktop and was like hell might as well do it right (ie not spend $750 at Wal-Mart for a Dell) Anyway, since I would like to game with it, specifically Battlefield 3, I wanted something of fairly high performance and something that is "future-proof". I will be buying parts gradually to put together so I won't be spending it all at one time. However, I listed a few of the more important bits of the computer that my limited brain has put together. So my question is, does 2+2=4? Also, I don't know many good names other than abc's PSU NEEDS TO BE CORSAIR etc so if for some of the things I should use a different brand or what-not, that'd be good. I am open for any suggestions. You are my only hope.

The difference between 1333 and 1600 isn't that large, choose whatever's cheaper.

I literally don't know. I haven'tbeen keeping up to date with computers for a while.

Though since all of this stuff looks very familiar circa 6+ months old, I'm guessing there is a new bunch of "THE stuff to get"

What's the budget?

EDIT: Holy s*** SOOOOOOO apparantly AM3+ has arrived and AMD "FX" (bulldozer?) is here in 1 to 2 months. Definitely wait to see how that turns out. (though inevitably it will be a big disappointment given 2 or 3 years of waiting, losing to intel repeatedly and bringing back high end marketing names etc from "back in the day")

i5 + LGA 1155 is still faster than 1090T setup. If you bought everything now, AMD would be a tad more expensive, a tad slower but far more futureproof. Worth explaining that actually. Intel is "futureproof" because it's simply extremely fast and even the i5 750 (remember that?) is still more than capable of running whatever you want. AMD is "futureproof" because they make a decent effort for new stuff to always be forwards/backwards compatible. E.g. my 3 (4?) year old not-massively-expensive motherboard could still just drop in the current flagship CPU, a 1100T 6-core thingy, and it'd work no problem.

We'll say my budget is approx. $1,000 give or take a few hundred not including the monitor. Assuming I can force myself not to buy other silly things.

This was one thing that I was looking for. Something that I could easily upgrade in the future.

So basically what you are saying abc is maybe wait a few months to see what happens with AMD "FX"? Since I'm quite new to this I'm open to any suggestions.

Given we're always playing the long game (futureproofing 'n' all) it would seem silly to rush out and buy something that seems pretty good value, only to find out that when the new generation of CPUs come out next month they're 30% faster, 30% more efficient and backwards/forwards compatable another 4 years for the same price as the CPU you just bought.

Bit-tech (trusted people) say 20th June 2011 infact. It's a leak so it's not set in stone, but leaks happen all the time so it's probably right assuming no last minute production mess-ups. source: AMD Bulldozer and Llano launch dates reportedly leaked | bit-tech.net 8 cores, 6 cores and 4 cores. May as well just wait and see, it'll probably either drop the price of what you've been planning to buy or be faster AND in your price range.

As this is progressive, in the mean time you could buy a PSU (which can be used in your current rig) and a new GFX card to satisfy the need-for-new-shiney-stuff for a month or two. New graphics cards tend to pop up August onwards so now is actually probably the optimum time to buy this years range (in terms of availability and price)

Indeed...ok so for the PSU and GFX cards I linked would be good far awhile then? I actually don't have a desktop at the moment so this build is going to be from the ground up. Like I said I don't have much experience with what sort of quality I would get with those.

I also vomited at the sight of the case xD Also u need sum cable management isnt it bruv.

Wait, why is your CPU cooler on the wrong (right) way around? Does the bottom fo yours err "twizzle" around for different orientations or have AMD fixed something on one of there "7 series rehash # 34,383" motherboards?

LOL @ Pie. You have pie because I wanted to use a compromise in order to avoid massive oversight the add-on has. Consequently, you have pie.

Sadly that's about the best I could do with the cables =/ Couldn't fit much more back behind the mobo.

Err what's wrong with the CPU cooler? I'm was certain it was in the correct orientation until you said something to completely destroy any sort of confidence I had...

I like my case

Don't worry, the cooler is on the right way. Looks like a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ by the looks of things; one of the only coolers that actually sits the right way on AM3 motherboards. My Akasa Venom blocks the first two RAM slots.
