OK, I'm going to be upgrading my fiance's parent's computer. First off, they're cd-rom drive has gone out and I need to purchase them a new one. I also want to get them some more ram and a decent video card for her dad. He likes to play those old timey war games and I want to get him something that will make it run smooth. I dont need a big one or say one that will make MW2 run on it, just something nice but isn't too shabby. I'll post the system specs and hopefully you guys can direct me in the right way. I was also wondering if I should upgrade them to Windows 7. Do you think I should or leave them at vista but change it to 32 bit or even downgrade them back to XP. I'm pretty much open to all suggestions but would like to keep the price range reasonable.

RAM is pointless, 4GB is fine for everything unless you are a proffesional web developer, video edittor etc and work from home.

Considering it costs $hundreds win 7 is also pointless as it has very little performance benefit and little usability benefit. Also win 7 is too new to install yet.

Basically a hell of a lot is pointless because it's not an ancient PC and it doesn't get used for anything tasking.

The only thing worth buying is a GFX card. I'd go for a ATI HD4670. Something like $50 - $70. Fastest (with one really bad-for-the-money exception) GFX card that doesn't need a $80 power supply just to run without breaking the whole PC.


There is quite a bit of useful free stuff that can be done:

defrag'ing the HDD
customising the startup programs
uninstall unused programs
