Ok yous are probably sick to the back teeth of seeing threads like this but here goes.

I've been thinking of getting a PC for gaming possibly soon and i was wondering what kinda thing could I expect for say £500~(just a rough estimate for now, I haven't set a definite budget or limit to what I would spend) like would it be able to handle some sort of recentish releases? (i'd be mainly looking to play stuff like CoD4, Black Ops, possibly trying out games like Sc2 or HoN and some new releases for around that price.)

I will love you all forever and ever if you can help this clueless consolefag out

I actually have no idea.

A samsung HDD? £40
A lian li/antec/coolermaster case. £50
A PSU of some circa 500w description. £50
A DVD+-RW. £15
Windows 7 OEM. £100

Leaving £250~ for a GFX card, mobo & PSU. Guess that means GFX card will be an ATI HD5770 (£75) An AMD Athlon quad core. £50 ish mobo. £25 change. Spend change on GFX card if poss.

Screen resolution?

Doesn't include Windows 7 unfortunately, but that will play any of those games at 1080p with decent settings (probably high, but not much AA etc.)

Ah, yeah... RAM is required.

Save a bit more (£130 maybe) and get a new monitor. 1024*768 is s***. Though it'd still look better than a PS3 on 1080p (serious)

The reason I suggest a new monitor comes from recent experiences of PS3 & 360s, as will be described:

PS3 and 360 have utterly s*** and TERIBAD graphics. They both really did shock me. Two reasons: 1) TVs in general don't have great picture quality 2) It's not HD is it, we all know it's upscaled 576p or whatever the number is which frankly looks s***e on a 1080p screen - imagine looking at a photo or painting then remove half the pixels! 3) PS3 (and 360, I think) "antialiase" everything 4 times, this is good but make it appear blury.

HOWEVER, other than the fact it'd be easier to see people's heads popping out etc if it were in twice as high definition (e.g. true 1080p) NONE OF THE ABOVE MATTERS WHEN YOU'RE SAT 8 FOOT AWAY.

Now consider PC gaming. You're sat 2 feet away. All of the above is now relavent which gives you two solutions: Use a small screen (e.g. yours) but this means you can run pretty high quality settings etc but it is annoyingly small. Or you can have a much bigger more impressive picture but probably need to scale back a bit (but no way near the amount of scaling back that consoles do to use a 1080p screen)

Basically the answer is probably this: Build a really good PC. If you like it or get bored of a small screen, buy a bigger one once you've saved up. That's a much better idea. Ignore all of my comments before that in this thread (apart from my first)

While most games run at either 600ish some above but most below or 1024x768 the ps3 is capable of true HD. Wipeout varies its resolution but runs True HD

One exception doesn't make any difference to any other games :L But anyway this is probably as irrelavent as my post about resolutions etc to start with (which was VERY irellevant :L ) Also my comment hardly takes consoles in the best light, I appreciate the visuals in GT5 for example are far better than say COD.

Out of curiosity, because ATM I'm sitting maybe 3 foot away from the screen when I play PS3, is there a list of which games run which res? I know it says on the back of the game box, but that's a "what it is upscaled to" not a "what it is actually rendered in."

On topic & at the original post. If I was Cloud I would now know that I can get a ATI HD77999950 pro HD radeon and DDR3 RAM but thinking about it I'd still have no idea what that'd mean.

Essentially with a HD5850 based system you won't have to worry about FPS or settings this side of (and including) 1920*1080 Might have to tone down on the odd exception (I may as well just write crysis here...) but "toning down" just means forgetting anti aliasing so it'll still be highest texture settings etc & 1920*1080 just will skip one post-render effect.

No list to my Knowledge.
MGS runs at 1024x768 which is one of the best looking games on ps3.
GT I believe also runs at different resolutions. Some being HD but most being similar to MGS, but in a much cruder way, the effect are all 576 upscaled i think but the graphics of the car aren't. Can't be sure on this.
Killzone 2 also runs 1024x768 with elements of 720p
I think the only game that runs consistently on HD is Wipeout and maybe some PSN games (iirc superstardust HD, though if you see the game it isnt exactly cutting edge graphics).

Didn't know PS3 anti aliased everything 4 times. IMO aa is the worst thing about the ps3 graphics. At times it is awful.

Meh, all games are different. Was genuinly shocked at Bops, I was expecting it to be worse than on PC but I didn't expect it to actually look "bad." Had PC & PS3 plugged into the same monitor so was playing the same SP level switching between PC & PS3 every few mins.

From what I've been told, it's pretty easy. All the parts come with all the cables/components necessary for assembly + instructions. I've not done a build myself but I can't fathom it being too difficult if you are even remotely mechanically inclined.

Sarcasm aside...

Each slot/connector is a unique shape size. Without fail everything has a nick/cut-out so that it can only go in one way around.

If there are several of the same slots etc, put it in the slot conviniently labled "1." Then use slot labled "2" etc
