Default Re: New pc

Everything is alright except:

The motherboard (is a joke) but to be honest unless you overclock, want RAID, CF/SLI or advanced features (gigabit, esata, etc) then the MOBO is fine to live with. I'm guessing you don't care about any of the advanced mobo stuff or you'd be spending £600+ on the PC.

The GFX card is a complete joke lol, I had one about 2 years ago and at £120 it was a rip-off then, it's still a rip off even at £40. It can't max COD4 @ 1440x900 (720p HD TV or 19" widescreen or a cheap 20" widescreen) with filters so it'd probably die in WaW or MW2. You can get something about 3x more powerful for only £50. It's called a HD4670, that's the min you should look for.

The PSU most probably won't cope with anything more powerful than a HD4670 so if you do want a GFX card that'll max games in hi res you're looking at probably another £70 of upgrades just on the GFX card & PSU.

As far as maths goes, you can't do speed = frequency * no of cores it simply doesn't work like that so you're e-peen is stuck with a "2.6GHz quad" as opposed to "10 something GHz" but no biggy. Anyway the real point I'm getting at is that CPU is currently one of the best budget gaming CPUs so nice choice

Seems a silly thing to ask, but are you going to install the OS yourself? Have you even got a spare OS? Have you done it before? (it's not exactly hard installing vista/win 7, but it helps if you've done it before. XP is a bit of a bitch to install tbh)

My dad has like 4 spare OS' and he knows what he's doing with programmes and os' but not specs.

Can you recommend me some hardware (Components) that are good? so i can make the computer from scratch and figure it out that way, my dads made one before so we know what we're doing putting it together but i still and stuck with this quad core business, i see mw2 needs a somewhat 3.0GHz processor, would i need a 3.0GHz Processor or could i go with a say 1.6GHz dual core...

Ah no problem, I'll spec ya something:

Core I7 965 extreme - £999
Rampage II extreme mobo - £250
Intel Extreme series SSD RAID 0 x4 = 1TB - £2000
CF HD5970 - £1000
Custom WC loop - £300
HX1000 PSU - £200
Lian Li case - £300
Dominator GT 2400MHz DDR3 RAM 12GB - £500
PercI5 raid controller - £100
Sound card - £100
3x 26" Dell SE monitors - £1500

Total = 2/3 = 66% of the average UK salary.

Hopefully I've made my point, you kinda need to say a price range... and if you've any funny business like is has to be Intel/nVidia even if it's worse or it has to a million GB of RAM even though it makes no difference etc, now would be a good time to mention it (also does the price include a monitor, gaming mouse etc?)

For some reason (I suspect it's to do with the word "minimum") IW quote the spec needed in 8-year-old hardware and that's a bit like currency, hard to convert it into something "up to date" thus meaningfull.

As I said you can't multiply cores by speed etc to get overall, so note that this is all crossed out because it's wrong.

0.375GHz eight-threaded Intel Core I7 = 0.75Ghz Quad core = 1.5GHz dual core = 3GHz single core

There is no convinient rule to follow unfortunately. The thing to do is just to get a NON-LOW-END modern CPU. If you do lots of vid editting or won't upgrade for a long time get a 2.5GHz+ Quad core. If you just play games or will update every 2 or 3 years get a 3.0Ghz+ dual core.

I can't emphasise how important that "modern" bit is. It's important because manufacturers chage proccessors a lot each year but don't really change the name and/or to the unsuspecting public they may look identical.

For example The Core 2 Duo (model number: E8400) is 3.0GHz and dual core, but it rapes the much older but identically named Core 2 Duo (model number: E6750) which is also 3.0GHZ and dual core. I just highlighted "model number" because the names are the same, so the model number is crucial to telling them apart etc. On the AMD side a 3.2GHz Quad core Phenom is WTF pwned by a 2.4GHz Phenom II (2)

so yeah, pick a budget and we/you/I can go from there

Oh, sorry I didn't see your reply earlier.

Ah that's a bit of a shame because I just stumbled across DEAL OF THE CENTURY (see below) but obviously I hope you found something decent for you.

Athlon II x2 (brand new CPU, just out. 2.8GHz dual core, will beat any sub £90 Intel CPU)
HD4670 (will play COD4 in HD with all details turned up to max at good FPS)
320GB HDD, 2GB of relatively fast RAM and XP included for UNDER £300

EDIT: Oh yeah, you said you had an OS. In that case you could get a Athlon X2 (bit older and slower than the one I mentioned above) and an ATI HD 48-frickin-50!!!! (normally the sort of thing found in a £500 PC) 4GB of RAm, 500GB HDD and everything else for £300

If you wouldn't mind, I'd be interested to know what are the specs of what you're getting for xmas? (and a price obviously)

Well now *that's* innovative! About 90% of all cases do that, the other 10% use passive cooling (a rough guesstimate).

I was avoiding the cruel truth, especially regarding the age of the CPU, performance of the GFX card and the whole "cold air in, hot air out" concept of the case.

I'd also like to disprove your rough estimate, every ATX PSU I've ever seen has a fan. Thereby creating a small vacum so as hot air goes out, outside, colder air, is sucked in

Obviously specing a £4000 computer is not neccessary. It was in reponse to his question saying "spec me a good computer" yet NOT LISTING A BUDGET. Spec me a good car? Ferrari Enzo. What, you mean you don't earn £400,000+ a year?

You can play MW2 on max settings for £300 if you get a "last year's" discounted PC. In fact don't even go there regarding PS3 vs PC lol.
