Default Help with Sony Vegas / Video Rendering

My background is audio production not video and I'm struggling to understand why something is happening when I render that I'm hoping someone can help with.
I'm screen-capturing some user activity (nothing too major, mainly cursor moving and VU meters) and saving as a .avi file. When I preview this in media player it is crystal clear. The file size is around 360mb
I import it to Vegas where I edit out crap and add pre/post rolls etc. When I then render it again as an uncompressed .avi , I end up with a ridiculous 29gb file. Not only that, the quality has dropped so that 12pt text is barely readable.
Any ideas?

What resolution are you exporting? I assume it isn't something as simple as this.

I think the default render template is 720x480i , 29 fps
That gave me an idea and I checked the properties of the original .avi - it's a crazy 200 fps (plus 1260 x 940). My understanding is that the fps rate wouldn't actually affect image quality - maybe I'm wrong?

Go into the project properties and click the blue box that should say something like "match properties to file" and select the file you're using.

Then try rendering.

Cheers, I'll give that a go tomorrow - I'm sick of the sight of Vegas for today.
I have quite an old version (v6), hopefully the option is still there.

Very odd, this. I changed the project settings and although I did get a great rise in video quality, the file size was astronomical. I'd rendered 5 sec as a test and it took 3 mins and resulted in a 2gb file. I'm sure this has got to be to do with the 200 fps of the original file, I have no idea why the screen capture software does it at this rate, far as I know the human eye can't distinguish anything different past around 30fps.
Anyhoo, Wunda you've given me the solution, I tried re-rendering in other formats and matching the project settings has definitely helped. I can now render a wmv at a sensible file size with only a small loss in quality. Thanks!
