Default Has anyone ever overclocked anything?

Just curious to see if other MW2F members have.

Ever since I've started buying particular hardware I've OC'd as much as possible. Having said that the current rig is not OC'd yet despite having bought it for purely that, I'm conserving it by running low voltages until I need to OC when it can't keep up with the games I play.

Not yet i havent, i want to but my mobo wont let me.

And i dont know if i should get a new mobo and ram, probably costing around £130 for both, or save up and just get a new CPU (something like i7), MOBO and RAM which would cost alot more.

No, if I can't run MW2 or the other Fall release games in settings I like then i'll probably spend some of my Xmas/Bday money on a CPU heatsink.

unless the mobo came from a packard bell/dell/other OEM crap then you will be able to OC via bios.

You can OC anything via software (even a dell) but results are mixed.

You can still OC with crap RAM, just you'll have to OC the CPU & MOBO and leave the RAM alone, or accept the RAM will only do a small OC (having said that my cheap RAM OC'd massively, but I had to compromise in lots of areas to get it there and took a lot of tweaking and blah blah blah)

bear in mind saving for I5 would currently cost you £350. £160~ would get you a 3.5GHz Quad core and Crossfire 4870s... (you can't really do CF on a I5 rig)

I was thinking about it but my friend overclocked his and then his computer absolutely failed. So I reckon I'll just leave mine alone so that it doesn't break or die in anyway.

LOL wolf, overclocking is 100% safe if you are a 100% common sense orientated person.

You should totally do it, if it overheats and die you'll at least have a nice BBQ maker.

Ah but having a brain that works 100% on common sense you have identified that you do not know how to do it, thus to avoid blowing anything up your common sense tells you to go and research it before you do it.

The demise of common sense is literally the reason the world as we know it will end.

Default Re: Has anyone ever overclocked anything?

I've overclocked a few systems... I started with my old AMD Athlon 3500+ Stock speed was 2.2GHz, I managed to get it up to 2.5GHz with the stock cooler... (Actually got it up to 2.8, but it was seriously unstable, could boot into windows, but that was about it)

My current dual core 5600+ overclocks quite nicely, from 2.8 to 3.2, with only a minor adjustment to voltage, a reduction of the multiplier, and a fairly large increase in the FSB... The RAM automatically OC's on this mobo to keep up with my OC... When my CPU's at 3.2 my ram runs at 897Mhz...

As for overclocking graphics cards... My 7900GS overclocked quite well once I put a decent cooler on it... Can't remember exact figures off the top of my head, but it was around a 40/50MHz increase, which might not sound like a lot, but they're only 450MHz at stock speeds...

My 9800GTX+ on the other hand is fitted with a nice big heatsink, and factory overclocked... Instead of being 738MHz it's 745... Such a tiny overclock that I don't actually see the point... And it causes minor hiccups, texture flickering, minor artifacts etc. So I actually downclock it using EVGA precision to the default of 738MHz, and all the problems disappear... I'm never buying a factory overclocked card again :P

Default Re: Has anyone ever overclocked anything?

yeah my previous Athlon X2 worked best with a reduced multiplier too. I think that's mainly because my MOBO could cope with the extra refference clock and HT bus, whilst the CPU just hit the Athlon-X2-wall of 3.2/3.3Ghz.

ended up 274MHz*11.5 = a rather average 3.15GHz, but I got almost 1400MHz on the FSB which was awesome for an X2 and somehow my budget 667MHz RAM held on at 900MHz perfectly stable system (although I did up the RAM voltage and increase the timings 20% which is hardly ideal for an AMD system)

I overclocked my computer because I wanted it to go boom. However, I was let down with a computer that can actually run some applications.

Should store brand computers ever be overclocked? I talked with a friend today and he said it's only for "custom machines."

you can OC anything
dell etc like to make it difficult (but not impossible) by blocking certain settings but those can be gotten around sometimes.

what he was reffering too is that dell will use cheap components that don't overclock very well. for example a good motherboard (like mine ) may be able to cope with 60% faster "speeds" than stock before crashing, whereas a cheap dell mobo can only take 10 - 15% faster before crashing horribly.

(obviously the idea with OC'ing is that you take it as fast as you can WITHOUT crashing lol, so for instance I would settle with a 55% OC as it gives an error margin)

It all depends on hardware on how far you can push a machine. My desktop can hit 4.05ghz on the cpu for OC'ed. But a friends computer where the only major difference is the motherboard his can only hit 3.4 and it is hit and miss on if it works correctly or not.

The machine I built can handle some serious OC'ing and still kick. I could get it past 4.05ghz if I switch to water cooling. But it is on air for now.
