Default PC System Specs

Ok, so as I can't see a hardware discussion thread anywhere, I thought I'd start one...

What are your system specs guys and gals? Are you running a beast of a machine, or a netbook? Future proof or extinct tech?

To get it started I'll list my specs... It's a fairly decent mid range machine, can get as much as 350fps from CoD4 at max settings and a res of 1440x900. I dno't let it run that fast though, as the GPU gets a little warm :P

Spoiler:

Manufacturer: Me... I've been building systems for years

Operating Systems: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Motherboard: Foxconn C51XEM2AA (Great for enthusiasts, overclockers, me...). Nforce 590 SLI Chipset

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs) 2.8GHZ

CPU cooler: Frikking huge Coolermaster Gemini II heatsink with 2x Arctic cooling 12cm silent fans...

Memory/RAM: 4GB RAM OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Platinum Rev 2.0 800Mhz 4-4-4-15 @ 2.1V

Hard Drives: About half a TB split over 3 drives at the mo. 300GB Razer Barracuda for running my games from

Video Card: Palit (Non-reference design) NVIDIA GeForce 512MB 9800 GTX+ Downclocked to 738MHz. Cooled by the factory fitted MASSIVE heatsink and fan combo.

Physx Card Gainward 9500GT 1GB Passively cooled. NEW ADDITION AS OF 23.10.2009

PSU: Xilence gaming edition 800W

Monitor: Mirai 19" 16/10 display, 2ms delay, 1440x900; a budget brand monitor with real performance.

Sound Card: Realtek HD Audio

Speakers/Headphones: Speedlink Medussa 5.1 Pro gamer headset for gaming. Antique PYE stereo HI-FI Amp for movies/music

Keyboard: Logitech "Wave". Controls need to be remapped around "YHGJ" to make it comfortable for gaming, which is a bit of a pain in the ass...

Mouse: Logitech G5 Laser

Mouse Surface: Steelseries Icemat (Black)

Computer Case: Customised NZXT Alpha case with side window. Basic mods: Inside of case painted black with hard wearing enamel floor paint. Air filters fitted to front and side 12cm air intake fans. Thermaltake Cyclo 12cm exhaust fan at rear... Soon going to be chopping holes in the top to fit a 14cm extraction fan in the top of the case too

Default Re: PC System Specs

dante - why no 120mm fans in the front of the 300? either you're poor and could only afford 9cm fans or you are very good at typos

Manufacturer: myself
Operating Systems: Vista Home Premium SP3 32bit/x86
Motherboard: Gigabyte AMD 770 UD3 (MA770UD3 rev1.1)
Processor: Phenom II X3 720
CPU cooler:Thermalright Ultra 120a (TRU120a)
CPU cooler fan: Akasa SmartFan 120mm
NB chipset cooling: did run a 20mm fan, but it was useless due to low CFM
Memory/RAM: Buffalo Firestix Pyro 2x2GB 1066MHz C5
Hard Drives: Samsung SpinPoint F1 160GB/16MB cache OS drive, Seagate Barracuda 250GB/8MB cache
Video Card: Club3D Radeon 4830 non-refference Artic Cooling HSF & copper RAM sinks
PSU: CoolerMaster Extreme Power 650w
Monitor: Dell 19" widescreen 1440x900 5ms/1000:1 contrast/300cdm^2 brightness (Dell SE198WFP)
Sound Card: Onboard Realtek 7.1 HD Audio (whatever one they use on SB710...)
Speakers/Headphones: Logitech X-530 5.1 surround sound
Keyboard: Dell Multimedia
Mouse: Trust GM4200
Computer Case: Antec 300 w/ custom cable routing holes & red Thermaltake thunderblade VGA in 92mm
Cold Cathodes: blue front bottom, red back top

PROs
  • Very OC'able: MOBO does 300+ MHz FSB, CPU cooler at lowest speed is 29 degrees load, RAM uses D9GMH chips so should hit 1200~ MHz on CAS 5 maybe 4, CPU is a black edition obviously, refference 4830s get close to 4850 performance when OC'd mine has pure copper RAM sinks (like the best bit of my computer lol) and a rather effective "flower" HSF so should match 4850 performance.
  • Antec 300 is pure win for cheap, expandable, great airflow and decent looks.
  • SpinPoint F1 hard drive is very quick
  • MOBO supports 140w CPUs and AM3 is backwards compatible so should be good for at least one more CPU upgrade.
CONs
  • HDD is only 160GB xD  (was going to RAID 0 two 160GB but in the two weeks it took me to save for the second one they end-of-lined the 16MB cache model)
  • MOBO is rev 1.1 not rev 2.0 which would have had ACC thus unlocking fourth core thus getting quad core for 3/4 of the price of a real one
  • rev 2.0 also means rated at DDR2 1200 not DDR2 1333MHz
  • no CrossFire (but hey, how was I to know the £40~ premium for a CF mobo would be worth it since my GFX card now costs £50 and two in CF beats a GTX280. nevermind, 5850 should be win by the time I need to upgrade)
  • screen is not 22"
  • should've got a corsair PSU
  • should've got a modular corsair PSU
  • PSU temp sensor is cleverly placed on the 2nd hottest component of a PSU, hence fan spins quite fast which = noisy all the time.

There, the histroy of the COD:WaW era version of ABC's computer.

Next on the shopping list will probably be a samsung SpinPoint F3 as they are very fast and very cheap for when I get too fed up with my 160GB drive, then I'll OC the nuts of off it when it can no longer handle the latest COD at max settings, then get a HD5850 then be done with upgrades till the next few COD games and far cry 3.

P.S. 3dmark06 of 11,000~ not exactly great by todays standard but worth mentioning. For refference an E8400 & 4850 typically hits 13,000~ but then 3Dmark06 does hate AMD and ATI stuff

There kind of is already one of these topics. It's not a actual thread but it's discussion in the PC gamers group. I'll say them again anyway though

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 @ 2.00Ghz 2.00Ghz
RAM: 3.00GB
System type: 32-bit operating system
Manufacturer and Model (if you care): Dell Studio 1555
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
Rating: 4.9 (yea i know that's not much but it runs sweet)
HDD: 250GB (yea i know, thats not much either, i'm working on getting a terabyte desktop external hardrive)
GFX card: can't really remember and can't remember where to find it but it is one of the new Radeon's

If you didn't know it's actually a laptop.

No TechNet Subscriber Had it since aug when it was released to technet, msdn, and manufactures. Been running build 7100 since may when it was released and public beta since feb. I only ran XP x64 on this machine for 2 1/2 months till win 7 public beta came out.

and for others a snapshot of my rig using cpuz

At that time I was having a slight issue changing the ram timings. Since the ram I purchased wasn't working @ speed as advertised.

@abc on the cooler I should of mentiond that the cooler isn't stock, It is this

When I built this rig, I made it the way I did for 2 reasons. Speed, and gaming. I took about a month before I finilazed the hardware and made the purchase. I had quite of few other build lists but after alot of comparing and reading reviews and feedback on the selected products I choose them.

ah, I assumed "E8400 stock 3Ghz - 4Ghz" meant stock cooler as opposed to stating that it is 3GHz stock clocked. nevertheless still a good OC on that mobo if you don't me saying.

what SM2, SM3 & CPU scores do you get?

I just got 12k with a mildy overclocked 4830 (still missing over 15% of the cores of your 4850) bad news for me is a CPU overclock really won't do the GFX any favours since my CPU only needs to go at 35% to keep up with the GPU at 100% in some of the SM tests...

I haven't run many tests on that scale. Just prime95 for 12hrs to make sure it was stable. Any link to the test app?

we are discussing 3Dmark06, the most popular of a series of benchmarks for benchmarking your rig. As you may have noticed after it does the benchmark it outputs a score for your system. link to 3dmark06 homepage click "download now." the basic version is free, if you buy a code you can stick that in and get some more options but whenever you see "3Dmark06" scores being discussed it will be using the default settings which are the same for the free and the "pro" version.

It is not, unlike prime95, a stress testing program for testing stability of overclocks. 12hours on prime95 is very acceptable for even the most diehard overclockers.

I paid £200, so what? I don't regret it one bit. You have no idea what an improvement it is. Once you go SSD, you'll never go back.
