Default McAfee Rant

THIS ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE IS CRAP

I just got a trogan today and the only thing that they could do to help me was to offer to charge me $90 to remove the program their system couldn't. One hour and one search on Yahoo later I was able to successful remove the trogan just by following THREE Steps.

Seriously McAfee? You charge people hundreds of dollars a day just to do THREE FREAKING STEPS!

What exactly happened? If I may ask. My computer caught something the other week. I removed it, but now McAfee says I have to re-install it because it doesn't update. McAfee ticks me off too, it never works right, and eats a bunch of memory.

I have mcafee.

It has successfully removed a few viruses and blocked a few unauthorised connections.
It has never required a reinstall and the few "can't update due to error" errors have all been solved via restarting PC
The only "annoyance" is the once a month virus scan schedule - which is fine once you turn it off.
I have a fast HDD & 4GB of high performance memory on a 32bit system and it doesn't seem to take up too much CPU/memory resources.

Maybe I am lucky.

P.S. I'm curious to know what these 3 steps were? system restore? factory format? downloading a better AV?

Generally works for me. Every 2 or 3 months I wipe my drive completely and back up anything I really need onto an external HDD that I try my darndest to keep clean.

I got hit with the trogan Vista Security Service 2010. Once I did a system restore and downloaded another third party antivirus software I was able to completely remove it from the system. Since then my McAfee account says I need to renew the subscription I'll deal with that at another time.

It can block viruses, but it usually becomes powerless when my computer gets infected by a trojan.

I got the answer from here

How to remove 'Vista Internet Security 2010' VIRUS? - Yahoo! Answers

A question to all of you guys using McAfee what kind of subscription plan do you have with them?

Hmmm...

I have McAfee and so far is all fine and dandy. Caught several things in the past few months and had no problems with it.

What do you mean by subscription? Cant remember personally subscribing to anything.

Which version do you own?

Don't you pay a certain fee to have the service.

The name of the program I have is McAfee security center.

I just got my computer back from the repair shop where they had to remove spyware/trojan...despite the fact that I had the latest update and supposed full McAfee protection. Apparently, you can get this crap from watching videos...but MS, McAfee, and Norton can't or won't scan "videos" for potential virus's.

Oh, and to cancel a McAfee subscription is a WHOLE lot of fun, especially where you end up talking to a man in Mumbai India named Steve McQueen who talks you in circles trying to get you to keep your "valued McAfee product". Face Palm.

Actually its Bangalore, India, but I get the point. The past five calls I've had with McAfee has been as useful as learning calculus from a hobo.

Step 1: Outsource jobs
Step 2: Provide a crappy service
Step 3: ???
Step 4: PROFIT!

I have McAfee SecurityCenter too.

However, it the 3-user one I got from a mate who only need two of the licences. IIRC, shortly after installing, there was a pop-up where I had to enter in my mates McAfee account details which might have been something do with his subscription.

I think the reason that it is asking you to pay $90 is because your licence has run out so you are restricted the "free" features of the software. If I were you, I'd just renew the subscription as it is far cheaper and easier than buying a new AV.

Check out AVG

AVG Free - Download Free Antivirus and Antispyware for Windows 7, Vista and XP

I haven't used it in ages since I've been using Mac's the past few years but it was the shit back in the day - as capable and up to date as McAfee & Norton's, etc except it was free. I think it still is.

I'm using Malwarebytes as a back up antivirus/malware protector.

You poor sod. Try AVG as someone else suggested. This is what I use and never had any problems with it so far. As long as you keep it updated you should be fine. The best part is its completely free.
