My COD4, Rockband, and other notable games are being 'unreadable' and cant be played from titme to time. I think the Xbox drive scratched the disc, and I want to know why that works. Can it be fixed? Or do I have to do something to the disc? Please reply.

Apparently you are never supposed to play 360/ps3 vertically because the disc can wobble in the draw and scratch (I learned my lesson on the ps2). ANd also--I've found that sometimes tiny hairs (synthetic fibres in my case) got onto the lens thing that emits the laser---it can distort the laser and cause the disc to be 'unreadable'

If you have any scratches on your game discs that make them unreadable, do the toothpaste trick, I used it for my Gears of War disk, you have to apply a none additive type toothpaste, use water to cleanly rinse it off, dry it out, pop it in your drive and you should be good to go.
I know everyone thinks the trick is a joke but reason it works because it is one product that actually won't destroy your game as long as you put a thin coat on. |

Hmm... Your discs are being "scratched".
Just a few questions, Are you sure its scratches, and not other things like fingerprints? Where do you keep your games when they are not in the console? DOes the game play for a bit and randomly say "Unreadable"? Or, Does it always hit specific data... ie: A map or song on a gamemode..... and then become unreadable?

I can play through the campains and stuff. When I go online it ends. Im sure its not a scratch but its something with the Xbox. Im going to repair the console for 3 weeks soon.
I keep the previous game inside the Xbox. I dont play vertically, and I clean the diska with the glasses cleaning clothe. Also my Madden 09 has 2 rings o the disk side. I tried the toothpaste trick on an unused CD and it doesnt work. |

Weren't some of the first generation 360's found to have a fault that caused them to cause scratched disks? The lens wasn't focussing properly or something? And Chuck Norris already knows where you are...

Its probably a used G1 Xbox. I use windex for scratches but I haven't used that method in over a year. I try to take good care of my games.

yeah id say youre out of luck....if youre system is scratching the disc then fixing the disc isnt going to do anything. your best bet would be to just a get a new system, or see if you can buy a new disc drive if you know how to replace them. if ya end up buying a new console let me know cause i might buy your old on from ya.

one of my friends is giving me his friends old 360 and they said that it scratches disc's also, and its one of the earlier ones that doesnt have the HDMI cable port on it, which ill assume is 1st generation or whatever its called. my friend said i could get D-Skins to put on the disc and that should help, but im going to try to find a broked xbox (which i have found on craigs list locally for 50 bucks with a controller and cords) and just swap out the disc drive. then i can part out the the rest on ebay and maybe get a little money back too.

Or you can take them to a game store (like EB games) and they will re-surface them for like a dollar or two per game.... I had several done already like Halo 3, COD4, Turok, and the list continues

its the disc drive thats scratching the disc so that would be a waste of money to have them resurfaced when its just going to happen again. and i seen disc drives on ebay from 20-40 bucks. pretty cheap fix considering youll have to keep replacing games.
