I wasn't sure if this should be posted here, but whatever. I just played mw2 on my PC and could get an average of about 60 fps at max settings, but when I play CoD4 I get about 40fps at max??? Is this game just better optimized or is something going wrong here? As far as I can remember I can run CoD5 at similar frame rates to MW2, so does anyone know what's going on?

Resolution 1920 (or 1900, I can't really remember) x 1080

Specs:
Intel Core 2 quad core Q8300 @ 2.50 GHz
Radeon Hd 4870 @ 770MHz GPU clock (With latest drivers)
6GB RAM
640GB hard drive

I'm also using a program called GameBoost, which supposedly improves performance.

I'm using the maximum settings possible on each game, and since the graphics options on WaW are very similar to MW, I don't see any reason for such a big difference in fps.

I don't use gameboost, but I get average of ~80fps on MW2 and I'm capped at 125 on COD4. This is using a GTS250 (quite a bit worse than your 4870) and a resolution of 1680x1050.

hmmmm, turning off gameboost didn't work for me.

I know I'm not being capped at a really low framerate as I get the occasional boost into 80s when nothing's going on. I tried lowering the settings, but the differences were only minor, until things started looking REALLY shit. On the lowest settings and resolution I only got an average of 90fps. I'm not sure what's happening lol.

Modern Warfare 2 is capped at 90/91fps by default and it can no longer be changed, so that is why you see little difference with low settings.

I'm on about MW1 though, but I'm not sure the fps cap is on that, unless the 125fps you mentioned applies to everyone.

type in the console "/com_maxfps xxx" without the speech marks and replace the x's with the number you want.

Ok, I've just done that and on low settings I definitely can get a higher fps, but on high settings it's still just as low as before. I can tolerate it, but the number is jumping around like a maniac from around 10-60fps all the time - so gameplay ain't smooth at all for my liking. It just seems really odd CoD4 is having this issue, but the other games aren't :/

The only thing I can suggest is to set your max fps to about 60 or 80, then reduce your settings slowly until you find it bearable enough to play. Start with the big things like AF and AA, then you can also look at Performance Tweaks - Call of Duty Forums.

MW2 is, unlike WaW, very well optimised for low/mid power computers. COD4 perhaps isn't as well optimised, but then back at the release of COD4 the Call of Duty franchise was hardly a number 1 hit with consoles yet it was a massive hit in the world of PC so maybe IW still had a bit of a "if they want to play our COD games then they will have a high spec PC and thus we don't need to put a massive amount of time into optimisation."

Eitherway, that doesn't help. What may help though is context.

Are you comparing frame rates in multiplayer? Remember that very small things like bullet impacts, brass ejection and explosions have a very big effect on performance. What I'm getting at is in MW2 because you're only close to 5 players within a 50m radius not much actually happens. Whereas on a 32 man COD4 server there is far more on screen action and this WILL affect low/medium spec computers.

Sadly, my CoD4 doesn't let me use multiplayer. It just CTDs when I try to do it. It worked on my old computer, but it's real messed on this newer one. I've uninstalled it and tried again multiple times but nothing works. Sucks massively, since this had the best online out of all the CoDs IMO. Buts that's another thread lol. So no, I can't compare between multiplayer and single fps.

I'm starting to wonder if I just got a dodgy copy of the game lol. I have no idea how though that would happen though.
