Question Using desktop speakers and headset

Is there a way to use my desktop speakers for sound while simultaneously using my headset?

I want to be able to use my headset for Ventrilo chat and my speakers for game sound.

Oh, but I guess that would mean that my speaker sound would spam Ventrilo though my mic.

So...is it even possible?

*waits for ABC to come*

I don't think it is possible because I never seen anyone do it.

Yes, it is very simple, you can do it with any game + any sound. Like when i play i have Cod sounds in my headset, music from my speakers, skype through my headset ect.

Just start the game with speakers as default playback device. Then go to ventrilo, and in the options you can choose recording device and playback device. There choose your headset.

Atleast that is what i do. Another thing is choose speakers as default, start the game.
Tab down and choose headset as default device, start vent.

This.

I'm guessing you have a USB headset? Because if not you know you could just plug in the mic jack and leave the headphone jack out?

Definitely possible as others have said because the Vent client lets you pick the input and output devices for audio.

It really depends on your mic and how loud you have the desktop speakers cranked up. I have played with many people with the kinda setup you describe (I use this setup myself) and most are fine, and I have had no complaints come my way.

Only thing you need to check is to make sure you have your voice threshold sensitivity set at a reasonable level, factoring in the new levels of background noise... unless you use Push To Talk of course.

Thanks, I will give this a try next time I'm on.

I don't have a USB headset, but if I unplug the headphone jack, wouldn't that mean I can't hear my mates on Vent? I want to be able to separate the game sounds and the chat sounds so it's easier to hear them both.

I don't use PTT and I know that people can hear my dogs playing in the background so I'm sure they would hear the speakers too. I guess I can just tweak the sensitivity in Vent and see if I can make that work. So far it hasn't annoyed anyone too much, as far as I know.

If you want to also *listen* to voice comms via the headset, seperated from game audio then you will need a USB set. This is how I played WoW... all voice incoming and outgoing on my headset and game sound via speakers.

You need a USB headset or second sound card because you need a separate device to pipe the sounds to (USB headsets effectively contain their own dedicated sound card), unless you have some tricky audio drivers that treat each plug on your sound card as a different device.

When you plug in a USB headset, it will show as a new device in Windows and you can configure Vent to use that device for in / out audio and configure the game to use your desktop sound card (usually Default Device).

Problem solved if you just want to split the sound in both. Make for sure you use press to talk in Vent, set it to either the same key you use to speak in game, or to a mouse button.

In vent you can also move all the sound to one headset. For example, everyone in vent will go to the left stereo channel. That way you can hear everyone out of one ear phone. If you have surround sound speakers, you can even push them to one speaker out of the 5 or 7 that you use.

In Windows 7, you can adjust the volume of each applicaiton from the "speaker" icon in on your computer. So you can make Vent louder then CoD.
