1) Is it a slow computer? You can't really make a slow PC fast. It sounds like you expect it to be the fastest computer in the world just cause it only has 3 things installed on it - that's not how it works.
2) Specs? As many as you can give us. But not a DXdiag ffs... 3) Is this a joke?

Try adding moar RAM? If you have a flash drive, you can try using ReadyBoost. My laptop has 2GB of RAM, and my drive is 2GB, so *essentially*, using ReadyBoost lets the computer use the space on the flash drive for better performance.
I'm not a tech-whiz, just a suggestion. |

Before we can do ANYTHING we HAVE to know which OS you're on (because everything is slightly different for different OSs) and then we can give you directions such as how to find the CPU model number and the amount of RAM, which will then let us give specific advice on what sort of settings to change.
So yes, 1) Find out what OS you have, and post it here XP, vista, 7, 98, 2000, ME, mac OSX? 2) Do a virus scan whilst you wait for someone to reply on how to find details of your hardware. 3) You got mcaffee anti virus by any chance?

I just asked on the off chance you did have mcafee because it has an OK set of tools which clean up your PC and get rid of missing/usless temp files. You can get these sorts of programs on the internet, but I personally wouldn't trust them.
Right, next step then is to find out the CPU model & amount of RAM so that we are realistic in how responsive we are aiming for. "right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the General tab. CPU information is listed in the first or second line of the Computer area." An example may be: "Intel Pentium D 630" or "AMD Athlon X2 5800+" I believe on that same screen it also says how much "system memory" or "RAM" you have. This would be useful too. Also, how much space is left on the HDD? (if it's a very small amount then this can cause general slow-ness) Go to "my computer," right click on the hard drive labelled "c" and choose "properties." There should be a small pie chart, with "free" and "used." We're interested in both, on this occasion.

WOAH. Are you sure it was 248 MB and not 2048 MB? I don't mean to sound rude, more suprised at the fact you have an ANTIQUE instead of a computer
BUT now that we know what we're working with we can give you better advice. So yeah, this computer will always feel "extremely slow" at best. The only thing you can do is minimise the amount of unneccessary stuff that's running in the background and/or add more memory (VERY expensive because you'll need very ancient stuff that they don't bother making anymore) When you turn your computer on, as well as loading windows it spends ages loading useless things that you don't really want (or at least can load yourself should you decide you want it) Stuff like MSN, control panels, etc all take ages to load and make the computer feel very slow because they're just sat in the background doing nothing but taking up PRECIOUS memory (RAM). So, you need to turn these off. The easiest way is to use a program called Autoruns. However this is a very VERY powerful program so USE EXTREME CAUTION. This program shows you a big list of all the programs that get automatically loaded when the computer turns on. You can un-tick the box to stop it loading. As I said, this is a VERY powerful program and if you un-tick the wrong thing you may indeed be very very very stuffed. Once you download and run "autoruns" (NOT autorunsSC) 1) CLICK THE "LOG ON" TAB 2) Look at the HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/windows/CurrentVersion/RUN bit and ONLY that bit. 2) UN-TICK EVERYTHING NON ESSENTIAL (e.g. MSN, iTunes, apple helpdesk, apple auto updater) 3) IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT SOMETHING IS, DO NOT TOUCH IT. I can't emphasise this enough, if you don't know/recognise one/all of them, DO NOT UN-TICK OR TICK IT. If you're a lil unsure about what can be unticked or not, post a screen shot and I'm happy to help.
