Default Pretty slow internet

Lately my connection has been not so great - most online games that I try, namely MW2, are pretty laggy. I tried out pingtest.net and it says that mine is anywhere from 600 to 800... which kind of defeats the purpose. I installed an M wireless router downstairs, plugged in to the ethernet cable. The gaming computer is upstairs, and it actually seemed to work fine for a while. I tried setting up a Linksys range extender, but I can't figure out why that isnt working. I even tried setting it up right next to the Linksys Wireless-G USB network adaptoer that we have, and it still didn't work. When I check the wireless status, the Mbps is anywhere from 11.0 to 54.0.

Does anyone know any reason that it would be doing this? On some days it seems to work fine and then on others the games are so bad that I completely disconnect sometimes. Is there anything I need to be doing with the wireless router, range extender, or USB adaptor?

Also, if it helps, it is very inconsistent. In a period of 5 minutes just now, it went from very smooth gameplay to completely losing the connection.

Don't understand what you mean by "defeats the purpose." A ping of 600 - 800 does completely defeat the purpose of TRYING to play an online game.

When I check the wireless status, the Mbps is anywhere from 11.0 to 54.0.

This is the speed of the LINK between your router and computer. This is NOT the speed of your internet. As long as it's OVER (higher) than your internet speed (wait till it says 54Mb/s and go on speedtest.net, pick the nearest server and run it and make sure the result is in Mb/s not MB/s) then you'll be fine.

Does anyone know any reason that it would be doing this?

Are other people using the internet? streaming, web browsing, downloading, watching TV etc
What did pingtest.net say for "jitter" and "packet loss." Sure ping is important but packet loss and jitter are FAR more important than raw speed for gaming.
Is the situation the same on the downstairs computer? Is the situation the same when it's wired directly via an ethernet cable?

This is getting repetitive.

The downstairs computer is my dads, and doesnt have any games installed on it. But its internet is always fast because it is the computer that has the wireless router on it and is wired with the ethernet cable.

I don't think the cable runs upstairs, so I can't try putting the router on mine, now at least.

When I ran pingtest before making the thread, I was getting "F"s by their standards, whereas now I have B's or D's. Twice I had 1% packet loss, this time 36%. During the last test the ping jumped to 2-4000..... and the jitter was also bad. Although someone else is using their laptop at the moment, also online with our network.

TBH it just sounds like you don't have a fantastic connection (bad) and on top of that you are dividing it between 3 computers (worse) and two of those are on wireless (even worse)

Wireless internet is actually alright in terms of raw speed. The wired downstairs computer vs your computer will only be a matter of Kb/s slower, but one on wireless will have a ping of about 10ms higher but the worst bit is that wireless isn't very reliable and has loads of packet loss and jitter (the two most important things for gaming?)

The only thing you can do, short of buying an ethernet cable is to try putting the router/wifi reciever in different places to get a higher "signal strength"

There is a microwave buried in the floorboards between your PC and your router.

It has been heating the eternal hotpocket for countless millenia.

Turn it off and enjoy a hearty snack.

Alrighty, just had the computer guy over today - since my dad was messing with the router and kinda sorta pressed a conveniently placed button which resets the password.... anyway, he said that we indeed have very slow internet and should upgrade. We probably will now, since my dad finally heard it from someone else other than me, haha.
