So I am pretty sure that I will be getting a new computer soon, my birthday is coming up, I also plan on selling my gun and my current computer. Yes you read that correctly, I am selling my beloved 9mm. So I figure I will have enough money to purchase a new computer and after reading all of abc's ye olde computer guide I think I found one that is pretty badass. But, I need the opinion of others to see if my decision is a good one. The only thing I'm not 100% on is the GFX card, it appears to be pretty good but I've only dealt with my 8400GS which blows so I have nothing to compare it to.
FRYS.com*|*Velocity Micro I'll probably get an Acer monitor since they are my favorite but I haven't quite figured that part out yet. Let me know if this is a good choice for the price or if you can suggest anything else. I'm sure I could do a home build but I am still a noob when it comes to a lot of the computer stuff. Thanks guys! |

That computer is terrible value. Buy from a custom-build site or build it yourself.
If you give us a budget, it will be easier.

Well, I'm not entirely sure of the budget yet, in fact, this one is a little out of my price range. I'm thinking between $800-1,200 USD. Why is it a terrible value?

That was a bad experience. I'm scared to click any more of your links
That was classed as "terrible value" for two reasons:1) The individual parts used are too slow to warrant the price that they cost 2) And then, to complete the terrible value, it's been marked up a LOT. 3) I'll add a third, as well as the above it's full of stuff that you don't need. 9GB of RAM. WTF. That's the computing equivilant to your beloved 9mm having a magazine capacity of 90. Yeah... you can fit more in than usual... but it's completely pointless... when do you need to fire 90 rounds without reloading... and if you do, why are you using a semi auto... and if you are on the offensive or severe-defensive... why 9mm... (but anyway. Lets not have a gun convo in tech discussion) Also, don't believe blurbs. "Nothing but the finest, most bleeding edge parts." The GFX card, a GTX275 is a "omg, sooo last year" affair. If I were you I'd just spend $800, build it yourself and not sell my "beloved" items. $870 Quality brands mean long warranties, cooler & quieter operation. Not exactly ground breaking, but very respectable & very easy/cheap to upgrade to something seriously respectable (infact for another $150 you could increase FPS by 70% by having 2 GFX cards in crossfire) Will play Far Cry 2 & crysis on high/highest settings. Laughs at console ports. ![]() click to make it a readable size P.S. The GFX card is AS fast as the one in the $1900 system. The CPU IS slower, but your M3 is slower than an M5... but ya M3 is still "more than adequete" to say the very least. Basically, both CPUs are so fast it doesn't matter as far as "keeping up with the GFX card" is concerned (that's the big flaw in most gaming computers)

Thanks everybody. Since I don't know jack about computers (obviously) do you think I would be able to build my own without screwing it up? Is there anything else I need besides those items on your list abc, do they include all the cabling and wiring needed?

Building your own computer can be fairly simple if you follow step by step directions, but it can get tricky troubleshooting potential problems (faulty parts, etc). Personally, I would recommend gathering all the parts and then paying someone at a small computer building store to assemble it properly. That is if you don't know anyone who is ACTUALLY tech-savvy (and not just someone who claims to be).
If you do wind up doing it yourself, be sure not to jump ahead of the instructions. Years ago my friend wound up grounding my motherboard because he didn't use the mounting screws correctly and he mounted it against the case instead of above it.

For the sake of investigating all your options you may as well at least enquire into how much a local shop would charge for a build if you approach them with a box of parts. Also, building a new computer can be interesting, it's a new experience and given how much we use computers it's probably the most practical and productive thing you'll do in a while Also, building computers makes you much better at solving your own problems with regard to techy stuff.

I did it completely right the first time without consulting any manuals past looking at the pretty pictures. Took around 30 mins to get everything up and running. You'll be fine.
