So if the guy is still using a single core Pentium 4, a 5770 would be his best upgrade path?

Yeah but he said this:

Now, since the graphics settings in crytek engine games go "medium, high, very high, ultra" I'll assume the OP grammar is poor(er than mine) and meant "highest" as opposed to incidentally the 2nd lowest quality level available?

crysis 1 or crysis 2 btw? I ask because crysis 1 isn't optimised very well so needs a suprising, even these days, amount of GFX power.

Also, 1600x1050 or 1600x1200? You need a GFX card that's ~11% faster to get 30 FPS at x1200 than by x1050 - Pedantic but possibly important.

Another important thought that's just popped into my head is power supply - what make & model do you have? Note I said "make and model" not "what wattage."

Finally, what CPU do you have? Two ATI HD5970 OC'd in crossfire (£1220 ish) will give the EXACT same FPS as a nVidia 9500GT (£50) if you're CPU is a bottleneck. Now that's important because some CPUs of pretty recent times are rather pathetic: the first Athlon X2 (i.e. not the Athlon II X2) will bottleneck a 9500GT on COD games, even the 3.2GHz version.

Oh actually, I missed one, canadian dollars or malaysian ringgits? Currency?

I think that's it for now. We'll assume you actually have a PCIe x16 slot etc!

let's say my budget is 200 dollars under and x16 slot
hmm, vis, is this the graphics card you are talking about?
Amazon.com: XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5 PCIE Graphics Card HD577AZNFC:…
or this one
Amazon.com: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card HD577XZNFC: Electronics

another question, my dad mention something about intel i7, which have the graphic chipset attached to it. from what i have heard, the chipsets are crap, i tried to look it up but i am dumb with computers and don't really understand any of those symbols and letters and stuff. also i am looking for a processor/mother board for my computer, any suggestions?

Just for the GFX card? I hope that's not $200 for a CPU, MOBO & GFX card.

All GFX card "chipsets" are very similar. XFX, Asus, VisionTek, BFG, Sparkle etc etc there is very little to choose between them.

By "very little" I mean they are all exactly the same speed wise (unless OC'd, then it's +- 5%) but will have a different type of cooler and maybe different connections on the back.

my dad mention something about intel i7, which have the graphic chipset attached to it.

No they don't.

from what i have heard, the chipsets are crap,

The chipsets for the motherboards for the I7, I5 are pretty damn good. The integrated graphics that you find on low end chipsets are very VERY poor indeed.

also i am looking for a processor/mother board for my computer, any suggestions?

Also, shop on newegg.com it's much cheaper than amazon and they actually have a clue about computers (but NEVER listen to any "buyer reviews" - they're mostly written by idiots who think they know about computers, write some hilariously wrong and then select "very high" in their "tech knowledge" bit when filling out they're name, product, thoughts etc)

$200 budget kinda puts you here:

$150 - ATI 5770
$180 (with rebates. w/o it's $200 and not worth it over the 460) - ATI 5830
$200 - GTX 460
$250 (or $230 w/ rebates) - GTX 465

None of those will play crysis at your res with everything on highest. However they'll play everything else with everything on highest, but the 5770 won't give a very good FPS in more advanced games.

In order of FPS per $, it's the 5770 followed by 5830 then the GTX 465.

If you would consider rebates, the 5830 can be had for $180.

I'd say that this is a very difficult price range because the performance of the 5770, 5830 and even GTX 465 yoyos between games (but we KNOW and expect that) and compared to old ATI 4890 which makes some particular games very confusing when looking at benchmarks (i.e. one moment a £200 GTX465 >>> a year old £120 ATI 4890, next res/game they're within a few %) GTX460 & 465 are shaking things up nicely though... a 460 786MB for £150 is mighty tempting FPS for ya money for UK folk...

EDIT: Have been researching much more as a 786MB 460 was interesting me greatly (same performance as a £180 5830... but only £150 = best value mid-range card since the 4850?!) but it seems the pick of the bunch is the GTX 460 1GB - nVidia have made a very big mess of this... (the 465 has more cores, but the 460 has more texture units... end result is that the 1GB GTX 460 is faster than the 1GB GTX 465... YET the SAME price or cheaper

to make it easier to answer, what graphics card can run mw2 on highest with a resolution of 1600x1200 and still get a frames per second of around 40^.

Refferencing this chart (the bottom one: 1920x1200, 4xAA, 16xAAF, max settings. It'd be within +- 10% of 1600x1200) you'd have to say ATI 5750, HD4850, nVidia 9800GT etc MINIMUM. They are as low as $50 with rebates (WTF?!?!?!?! wow, that is amazing value for money) for the 9800GT (*note the 9800GT is so amazingly cheap because it's 2 years old whereas the HD5750 is "current") or $100 w/ rebates for the 5750.

You may note the 5670 gets 41 FPS but this will have all been measured with a $1000 proccessor and because it's an average it means it must have dropped BELOW 40 odd at some points. That is why I've suggested cards that are just on the next level up from the 5670.

MW2 is a very very easy game to run. Wanting to play anything else besides a COD game (from DiRT to Bad Company 2 to WoW to Far Cry/Crysis type games) makes a big difference. But then once you see the graphics in those games... it's all worth it!

I hope that's comprehensive. Summary: 9800GT etc will run the game. I'd get a HD5750 to be on the safe side (FPS wise) but playing other games on high settings would greatly benefit from a 5770. Buying a 5830 or GTX 460 or so would be a generous present to yourself and ensure ass-kickery in games at highest settings for years to come.

i would be torrenting alot of games in my new computer, including ac2/3, bc2 (i already got that but my graphiccard now cannot handle it and it always have fps of 2 or 3), crysis: warhead, dawn of war chaos rising, bioshock and alot more games, so maybe i will go with a 5770 as vis say.
just another question, what is the highest possible resolution for mw2?

The 5770 is a very good choice, but you'd need to be playing on "high" not "very high" settings in most of the brand new games and you'd need to use either 2x or no anti aliasing to get a good FPS at native resolution. It will still look great and perform really well (not to mention leave you a lot of change) but IMO the difference between completely maxed out settings and "almost" is quite noticeable & it's a shame to spend all that money and just miss out. But whatever.

Err... weird question... I guess if you used eyefinity 6 you could get 7680*3200. I'm pretty confident this would fail badly though. There's a 4GB XFX 5970, which would in theory get 43.333333333333333 (etc) FPS at max settings but that'd all depend on whether the 4GB of memory was enough. Eitherway, it'd absolutely mental.

LOL 7680x3200, i would never guess.....
so what is the cheapest priced graphics card that is available to me if i want to play those games maxed out?
what do anti aliasing do anyways, my graphics card can never support it so i always turn it off for all the games.

You don't want 40fps. Anything below 60 will intefere with mouse responsiveness.

that's wonderful, i can get 2 nukes in 1 game with 28 fps acording to fraps, i wonder what i can do with 60 fps... so do 5770 support mw2 with 1600x1200 resolution and still run 60 fps?
(i am expecting "of course it does", but it is good to play on the safe side)

He doesn't post if he's not confident he's right about something. If you want to play to your best ability, 60 FPS is a minimum.

I have to confess I do find it very annoying when people ask for your help, you provide it, and then ask another question which greatly suggests they glossed over a previous input. On the other hand, it's really nice to be able to be lazy and just have to say:

Post #10, the first link, click it

All of those numbers are AVERAGES. So an average of 71 means most of the time it's more and some of the time it's less. It will dip inevitably dip near/below 60 for a few fractions of a second occasionally. It'll be fine.
