Default International Compatibility.

So PC shit is dirt cheap in the US compared to the UK. If I buy innards in the US will the work in my rig in the UK? Or is there some complicated electronics wizardry going on behind the scenes?

As far as I can tell the components are exactly the same but I don't want to end up a few hundred dollars down with a useless piece of hardware.

Apart from plug for PSU, I am not aware of any differences in any hardware at all.

^^^ Same opinion/view/understanding/not-heard-anything-different. Getting a 5850 haha?

Actually, to be safe, don't buy a PSU. Not because of the cable but because ours run on 230v and theirs run on much less with (presumably) a higher input current. If the PSU doesn't have "auto voltage detection" I guess there's no reason why it wouldn't go bang?

Regarding GFX cards, I believe the card we've been waiting for has actually been released. The 786MB GTX 460. Faster than a 5830. Slower than a 5850 (like saying "slower than a veyron ss") Class-leading power consumption (who cares, but nice for completions sake) Works fantastically at "relavent" (1280, 1440, 1680 etc) resolutions. Needs two 6pin pci-e cables. £150. How very reasonable. It's everything the 5830 isn't.

Unless you're buying something quite expensive, extra shipping (and tax?) will usually make up the difference.

If you were going to buy a GFX card, do be sensible and actually double check it is cheaper in the US once tourist currency conversion rates etc are accounted for

Cheapest* 5830 in UK: £141 inc. Del
'' GTX 460: £146 + howevermuch aria charge for del.
'' 5850: £199 + howevermuch aria charge for del.

*to the best of my knowledge.

I would make the most of that.

Remember to take an extra suitcase.

Just remember to check with your airline to see if checked luggage over one bag is an additional charge; they often rape you with a $50-100 per checked bag fee. I know it's off topic but you should know that. Also, not sure if you will be near Long Island or Yonkers, but there is a great electronics store called Micro Center that is a semi nationwide chain. They have pretty good deals on BYOC stuff and sometimes you can haggle with them on pricing or get a discount for buying lots of stuff.

Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more!
