Default Help Gamefreak buy a Laptop!

Okay well i need a new laptop for school, because the one i have right now is pretty much dead.

So this is what i need from my laptop:

- Needs to be fast
- Needs to be able to do multiple things at the same time ....
- Reliable, since i'm going to be using this a lot for school reports and essays, i had a big problem with my old laptop because it would always shut off or freeze up when writing an essay.
- I want to start PC gaming, probably CoD4 and SC2 maybe, so i want a laptop that can let me play those

Oh and if it makes any difference, i live in Toronto, Canada. So anything i could get locally would be cool too, but i don't have a problem with online ordering either.

Some help here would be greatly appreciated!

Well the whole gaming aspect of the laptop is not totally needed, but it would be nice. I was looking into Mac's, but good Mac's that i have been looking at are north of $1,800. That's a bit too expensive for me. I think the most i'd spend on a laptop would be around $1,500. I've heard Dell laptops are pretty good, any thoughts?

Apple's unfucked the MacBooks enough in gaming that they're fully capable of running large-ish games such as Call of Duty 4 and, while Bootcamp'd, Modern Warfare 2 (lol), plus the iWork suite is much superior, at least imo, to MS Office, even with '10 and '11 on the horizon, so I second the MacBook suggestion.

FAKE EDIT: I mean the MacBook Pros. The plastic MacBooks suck.

"Coolness" considered - get a mac.

Everything else considered, from value-for-money to performance, get a laptop. The HP DV6t, DV7t and DV8t are widely regarded as a great mid-budget solutions for high performance at a nice price with some casual gaming chucked in for good measure.

Sorry for off topic, but i'm so glad to see people who actually know what they are talking about when it comes to PCs and that hate on Macs, which fully proves to me that the mac owners I know who are like "oh windows pcs can't do this" are gobshites.

Macs aren't the answer.
Windows isn't the answer.

They both have plus & minus points, but the PCs plus point matter more to 99% of people.

Macs are useful for what they actually do. The problem is that most consumers don't know what it is that they actually do.

I saw a Mac the other day that had the same hardware as my laptop but for triple the price. A lot of people think Macs are better simply because they fill Windows with a ton of crap (i.e. have several programs that start up with Windows) & then wonder why it runs slow.

Don't get a Mac. If you're willing to spend that much, you may aswell get an Alienware Laptop.

I thought it was setup so the DV8t was 17", the DV7t was smaller and the DV6t was 14". Have a look, I might be wrong?

Native (in this case windows) is always better. However macs look very nice both turned on and off. I'd describe a windows based PC as looking "functional."

I don't think anyone is saying either is rubbish. Macs are better out of the box because their O.S. comes with decent pre-installed programs. The O.S. also requires less maintenance. Combined that with the stylish look, this is still not enough to warrant such an extreme price.

Contrary to popular belief, Leopard can be run on a PC.

Also, Windows can be made to look nice. Just use programs like Rocketdock, Rainmeter, Bumptop, etcetera. Many aspects of Windows can also be customized by 3rd party programs/hacks.

I use windows, mac os and unix on a daily basis (I have experience on linux but don't use it). As for making it look nice. tbh the thing I hate most about modern OS' is the fluff on the front end. I know this is popular with 99% of the poulation but I hate all that shite. flying windows, things that open and close in a fancy way, fancy docks instead of old style apple menu, active desktops. Unnecessary padding that takes up system resources.

Yep & Vista was a shining example of that.

I only like my home desktop to look pretty. Different story when to a business environment.

What do Macs actually do, anyway?

That is, what do they do that a PC couldn't do for less money.

Macs are industry standard in the graphics design and reprographics industry, and in this particular field are superior to PC's. This is only for the 2D graphic design industry. Web and 3D are more PC.

OSs like vista prooved that there is such a thing as "too much" - however I don't mind because my PC actually has some RAM in it? I'm also pretty on top of my OS, I have less than 5 items in my statup folder. I appreciate that most people don't have SSDs, lots of fast RAM or know how to control their OS so my experiences will be biased because I've always had very decent PCs.

This is what I don't get, I know they are, but why? I used macs a lot when I did media at AS, and as far as I can tell:
  • they were as fast to turn on as my home PC give/take a couple of seconds,
  • photoshop loaded quicker, maybe 10 or so seconds,
  • applying and rendering effects (i.e. actually using it) was significantly slower than my home PC,
  • more screen space (i.e. a screen with a higher resolution) was nicer.

The first one provided virtually no difference. The second point saves you 10 seconds at the begginning of each session. The rendering part (i.e. actually using it) was significantly slower but then if you know about hardware then that's expected. My final point is well... what if you don't have a 19" screen. What if you have a 22" or above, then it'd no difference or advantage PC. None of that is worth doubling the initial cost of buying the mac over the PC. Wait a second, does PS come installed as standard and included in the base price of a mac? Because if so then that's worth £500... so then macs are only £500 ish more expensive spec-for-spec.

Just looking at the prices of macs baffles me. $1200 for a core 2 duo (old, doesn't exist anymore) and a laptop 9400M (no joke or bias, if you asked me to name the slowest GFX card currently on sale, it's the 9400M...)
