I need to buy a new router, old one broke (yay just when i got my new computer)
Thinking about D-Link DIR-655, Extreme N Wireless. Opinions? Is this overdoing it? or is this the price range i should be looking at? Some info: Family of 5, I have 1-4 computers set up via dlink dhp-342 (plug to router - plug to wall - internet goes via electricity - down to basement - into a 4-port station - into my computers) If you don't know what it is google it. My sister have 1 laptop each, only use wireless, don't download much at all, they mainly stream. My parents share a computer, and all they do is check mail. Myself i listen to music and play online games alot of the time, torrents and upload to youtube (usualy when nobody is home because it slows the internet down so i can't play games) I think thats it

If the old one, did the job, then buy another one. Simple.
If not, then look around, and try to find some EXPERT reviews. Netgear, D-Link and Belkin are some reputable brands.

What Wunda said, I had Netgear and Belkin routers before, and they were very very good and reliable for me, specially Netgear.
Linksys routers are shit IMO, always broke down on me.

Update: Modem is now broken (i think)
Full story: Last saturday the internet started going off. I would unplug the router and the modem for 10sec, plug back in and it would work for 10-60min, then die again. Iirc it would read local only. I called support yesterday, they told me to plug 1 computer directly to the modem to see if the router was broken, i did just that and the internet worked the whole night. So i assumed the router was broken, made this thread and went to bed. Today when i got back from school, the modem had no internet connection. Run - cmd - ipconfig told me that the default gateway was blank. After around 4 hours of google work i found nothing that would help by changing something on the computer (enabling/disabling, ipconfig /renew ect) so i decided to see if another modem would work. Update: Router seems to be broken. Can't get it to work with anything. So now i'm back where i was last night, internet works on one computer, and everything leans towards just buying a new router. But i don't want to buy a new router until i know what caused the Ip bullshit I borrowed one from a friend and plugged the computer directly to the new modem and now i haz interwebz. Conclusion (probably a failed assumption): A, both the router and the modem is broken (at the same time seems unlikely). B, router had nothing to do with it, modem is broken C, Router is broken, modem is fine, but when i plugged my new computer directly into the modem, something fucked up. - On this, i got my new computer friday, and i didn't turn it off and on again until saturday, when the problem started. When i plugged the computer directly to the modem, it worked all night, i turned it off. I turned it back on the next day, and Ip was lost. D, router is fine, modem is fine, New computer is fucking it up. I still have not tried to restart the computer since booting it with the new modem, decided to update this thread first. Now i am going to try rebooting, if i don't edit this post again today, my rebooting of the computer fucked the internet up. EDIT: restarted computer, it is still working. Now i'm going to try plugging the router back into the modem and seeing if i can get wireless going with the borrowed modem Update: Plugged everything into the router, no wireless connection and no wired connection (I guess it's safe to assume router is broker) So now i'm back with 1 computer in the house with internet, connected directly to the modem. Actually, it is not connected directly. I connected the powerline to the modem, hoping to get 4 computers running through it, but unfortunatly only slot 1 on the powerline seems to give internet. Slot 2 (connected to my laptop) gets 'Unidentified network - no internet acces' So what i'm thinking now is that both the modem and router are broken -.- Update: I think it is the computer now (omgroflidon'tknowwhatitalkabout) What i said earlier about my laptop not having internet in slot 2, it goes for all slots. My new computer gets internet from all slots (on the powerline that is). No other computers get internet, if the new computer is plugged in or not. Ipconfig on my new computer when with internet gives these: Standard gateway: 213.64.252.129 So is the new computer actually fucking up the internet? Update: Took my laptop, plugged it directly into the modem, held reset on the modem, now i have internet on my laptop, but no internet on any other computer. So i no longer think it is the new computer that is fucked up, but there is still something that fucked up the Ip adress that i don't know what it is

Wow. You r haz problems. I honestly don't know what to suggest. I suppose replacing the cheapest first, would be best. You were going to buy a new router anyway, so do that, and that will at least eliminate one possible problem.

Sounds like the PowerLine switch might have snuffed it. Still, it would be worth checking the modem/router is configured correctly though and is assigning IP addresses (DHCP) properly, esp after the hard reset.
If your machines are getting proper internal IP addresses and can ping the modem/router, then your PowerLine switch is fine, but DHCP needs to be active for this to work and there should only be 1 DHCP source on your network - preferably the router/modem. If something else is set up to allocate IP addresses such as the PowerLine switch, you'll have all sorts of problems. |
