Default What is this?

Each time I power up my computer I get this. It doesn't affect my computer's ability to function, it just pops up for a bit, I press either cancel or ignore and I'm good to go. Any one know what it is, and what I can do to remove it? Click for enlarged view.

I believe that the best way in which to answer your question would be to invoke the power of logical elimination.

We shall post everything that this is not, leaving the thing that it is at the only possible answer!

I'll start.

1. Scotland Yard
2. Mike 'n' Ikes
3. ???

I implore others to continue my work, lest we fail our duty towards our beloved queen.

My imagination is too feeble to carry on ViS' game.

I sincerely apologise.

A quick Google search shows that it may be related to some sort of virus/trojan/keygen.

Firstly, I would either search your computer for this "file", or look through the event viewer for any errors relating to the message.

Apparently it comes with some wireless mouse/keyboard drivers. Disabling it from start-up may be a quick fix. I'm far too tired to say anymore. Its 5am.

The only thing that is in Startup is Fraps. However, the Razer config runs in the tray menu so I'll try disabling that and reboot.

Admirable, but I prefer google.

1) lchdrv (whatever that is) seems to only be associated with win xp, 95, NT4.0 etc. Old school by today's standards.
2) lchdrv seems to live in currentversions/run
3) "ntvdm cpu" blah blah is an error message associated with trying to run a 16bit program on NT4, win 95, XP etc (a 32bit OS???)
4) People seem to get this issue when installing/running loads of different programs from mouse/keyboard drivers to just trying to run really old programs.

What I'd do (since it appears to be nothing important, doesn't sound familiar & mainly that it lives in current version > run [generally nothing massively vital lives there, only annoying stuff (viruses, itunes helper, apple updater etc) and the odd control panel]) is simply remove the program that is trying to execute itself from the "run" registery-key-location and it will not run thus not fail thus not produce an error message. Then do a virus scan for good measure.

Use AutoRuns for editting/changing what runs automatically when the PC is booted. Download it, run it (can't remember whether you run the "normal" or the "sc" version of the file - I think it's simply a case of one works and one does nothing upon double clicking it so it's fairly obvious) click the LOGON tab, scroll down to HKEY_LOCAL_blah/blah/current version/run, identify whatever the program was called (it's name is in the top left of the error message IIRC) and ONLY untick the box, close program.

Reboot computer, if it doesn't appear then great. If it does, open up autoruns again and you might find it's being pesky and has ticked it's own box again. untick the box, click the program, press the delete key. Try again.

If it doesn't boot at all, restart the PC, button-bash F1 (or is it F8?) as soon as any text/image appears on the screen. Select "boot in safe mode." Open autoruns, re-tick the box, restart PC normally.

The last bit is the procedure you'd need if you ended up switching off a really important item such as windows explorer (explorer is the entire mouse navigation, clicking stuff etc business so turning this off would be bad.)

Can you recommend a good free virus scan? To the best of my knowledge, I don't currently have one on my computer.

EDIT: Problem solved, used Autorun and unchecked 2 boxes. Thanks abc.

Glad that helped. Further to solving problems like yours and removing viruses, autoruns is excellent at keeping your PC free from crap and making it run much more smoothly. The older the PC, the bigger the improvement in performance of tidying up your startup & run folders!

Generally all IT experts swear by AVG. As a stand alone program that only does scanning (which could be a bonus in some instances) then MalwareBytes is often recommended.

Don't have experience with either as MB just didn't want to install and AVG needed the internet to install (however, I needed a virus scan to find the find the virus that was infecting the rest of the network when you plugged that PC's network cable in. Go figure on why that made AVG useless)

LCHDRV = LaCHesis DRiVer?

You have a Lachesis, don't you? Reinstall your drivers and control panel and see what happens.

That failing to make the grade, see if you can run other DOS virtual machine apps. If not, repair that component (this bit's beyond me in my current state of laziness). If so, I'm stumped.

EDIT: I was trying to decide between posting this or simply fucking with this thread. Since I hadn't had a chance to truly exercise my capriciousness today, I chose the latter. Sorry about not posting this earlier and thank you to Abc for providing an even more comprehensive post than what I had in mind.

Even though I don't have your appreciation for all things Lazor / know all the model names, I feel stupid now. With deductive skills like that you should apply to the organisation that you listed as the 1st non-cause of GH's issue!

I do. Even though Autorun fixed the problem, I uninstalled the drivers and CP and it's functioning normal with no windows opening upon power up.

Ghost, try using Avast!. It is one of the best free AVs that I have seen.

ABC, install MalwareBytes. Just copy the msi/exe to a thumb drive and install it.

Why not just use MSConfig?

Autoruns is deeper and more thorough than msconfig. You can edit codecs & services etc. I also prefer the layout. The main reason though is I can never find msconfig on XP and don't use it enough to remember that it's called msconfig to find it via "run!"

Nice of you to come over and laugh at my posts Haha, nah, it's always a nice suprise to see old faces in new places!

Well that was what I was doing, it just didn't want to do anything. You'd double click the installer and it'd just flash up a window very quickly then nothing (yes, I looked in the tray, programs & services list, tried running as admin, tried running in compatability mode, tried doing it from a thumb drive memory stick (Yanks... :L ) and tried doing it from my desktop) I was in a hurry too so ended up just locating some very dodgy looking executables myself (which my current AV hadn't detected hence the need for another) and removing them manually - it seems to have worked?

I use Avast! (possibly because you recommended it to me in the first place) and it's been pretty awesome so I guess i'd recommend it.

Avast! conflicts with a couple programs I have so I use MSE.

As for AVG; I find it brings up too many false positives whilst letting some common viruses through (I speak from personal experience >.<).

Similar to my own. That's why I recommend Avast to most but AVG to the people who'll pay me to fix their shit for them when things go wrong instead of realising the fact that I ENJOY doing that shit.

Ghost, try using Avast!. It is one of the best free AVs that I have seen.

ABC, install MalwareBytes. Just copy the msi/exe to a thumb drive and install it.

What you don't like using regedit and making the changes yourself. HK/Local Machine/Microsoft/Windows/Current/Run. It isn't that hard.

There is a virus which has a random name, but ends with the same last three or four characters that can have the same thing you are talking about. This virus doesn't allow you to open most exes, even task manager. You can boot into safe mode, and use MSCONFIG (lol) to find it, it would look something like fjkdjfiatssd.exe Then search for *tssd.exe. Delete the exe, and then connect your computer to your network safely and install the AV of your choice.
