Default Rubber Band Man

So I'm noticing intermittent rubber banding in WoW/Fallout: New Vegas/MW2... time to update virus definitions and run a full scan or update graphics card drivers... ?

What kind of rubber banding are you talking about? misplaced model reference points causing textures to stretch to a point or network-related jerky movement?

In MW2 it's more like walking forward then freezing up for a second then going backwards a few paces/and or dying.

In WoW it's harder to tell but it definitely lags up and freezes.

That's network lag, then. Since smooth movement would be impossible if your game has to wait for a server response for every command, your client displays movement before verifying the server's reception of it. If you lose your connection, the movement that your client displays is periodically dagged back to the last state that the server has verified.

Your problem lies with your connection. ou graphics driver has nothing to do with it. A virus scan is also unliely to be of any use. You should be running one every week or so anyway, though, so you may as well try it.

^ That.

But doing a virus scan and updating drivers periodically never hurts.

I'm on a shared connection with 3 other roommates, but AFAIK they're not torrenting massive amounts of files or anything but I guess they could be doing something to affect it.

Torrenting massive amounts of files either causes latency or delayed establishment of individual connections. Intermittent breakups in your connection can be caused by interfering radiation if there's a wireless component, overtaxed routing devices and a veritable plethora of other possibilities. Bear in mind the fact that while your room may use its own router, that router is likely to be going into another routing device.

Speaking to a network technician to find out whether they know about this problem already and, if they do, whether you can do anything to remedy it on your end would be your best bet. Worst case scenario will be having to grit your teeth and bearjew it.

I'm at uni so... yeah.

I think there are two wireless routers on the main router signal along with two laptops hooked up to those and an xbox.

It's about a 3 megabit down constant, but the lag is intermittent. A speed test won't accurately show the lag I think.

How is that meant to tell him ANYTHING useful or even relevant?

a pingtest.net test is what you should use to look for lag.

speedtest.net is for err... speed...

note: pingtest will only work over the time that it runs (obvi) and thus if it's intermittently spikey the test may miss the spike.

Wait a minute. Just missed the FO mention.

Isn't that a singleplayer game? Can you describe the behaviour that you see while playing that? If it's consistent with the MP games, things have just started making a lot less sense.

Idk about that. Seems more like my video card just doesn't meet the minimum requirements and I don't THINK the problems are related. I think Fallout is just giving me low FPS.

Also, like I said it's intermittent.

New Vegas struggles on my GTS250, especially in Casinos where the shaders mean your FPS can take a big hit.

EDIT: IIRC, aren't you on an OEM machine which you fitted with a 5570? I would certainly suggest downloading Speedfan or HWMonitor and check your temperatures. A quad core (Q6600?) will run pretty hot in an OEM case with probably only one small rear fan. If temperatures are high, it can cause the CPU/GPU to "throttle" (ask abc to explain why this happens) and give you intermittent performance issues.

If your virus scan/driver update solved nothing, doing some things on Windows like removing unnecessary services and defragging the HDD can improve performance (or just formatting and re-installing Windows would remove any chance of it being a software-related issue).

Basically, heat causes more electrical noise which can ruin low-voltage signals by drowning them out. This results in the GPU/CPU having to slow itself down so that it doesn't reach the point at which the voltage of electrical noise equals genuine signals. If it still goes over, the noise will manifest as obvious and random errors such as graphical artifacting or, in worst-case scenarios, fatal errors.

If you ARE using a 5570, FO will simply be suffering from low FPS. I have NO idea as to how you managed to confuse that with rubber banding.

The shizzle about OEM systems having bad airflow is like saying that cars have bad seats. I don't think I need to explain that one.

@Vis, Fallout was running decently and sometimes I was noticing rubber band like behavior that I didn't think I could chalk up to just poor FPS. I don't think I'm at fenny level retardation, I'll let you know when I get there.

Oh, wait.

Sorry, I'm rusty.

If it's periodic stuttering without the time travel, you're likely to have slow memory. The fact that you're running a 1066Mhz FSB CPU in a Dell (Didn't know about this until I read it in another thread) supports this theory. Either turn down your texture res or live with it.

Why the fuck did you buy a Dell, let alone a slim one, anyway?

EDIT: Download Orthos and post your temps after Orthos has been running for a minute on blend mode.

It was my mom's that she pawned off on me which is still better then the other family computer I was using at home. Her decision to go for the slim too, not mine. It was purchased for home use but they never used it and gave it to me. I'll edit my post with it in a second.

Oh shi-

I remember it all now. For some reason, I still thought that they were buying you a new system even though you spent months talking about this.

:|

Good call, then, I guess. I'd personally recommend you taking the mobo and mounting it in a cardboard case with holes cut into it for fans while you save up for a heavy-duty card, followed by a new system altogether or anything else that takes your fancy. I've recently become quite skeptical about the actual necessity of a proper case, let alone a high-end or even midrange one, if you're not going to be carting your system around.

You're meant to screenshot your temps. That's kinda the point of a stress test.

:|

EDIT: Do it WHILE the test is running.
